IDS Mixed-Use Development in Pasadena Playhouse District

A new 5-story mixed-use development is coming to the Playhouse District

An exciting new mixed-use project being developed by IDS is planned for the SE corner of Colorado Blvd. and El Molino Ave.  The new 5-story office building will replace the current 2-story “Nest Furnishing” store and will hopefully inject some much needed energy onto this corner, which is already home to some great businesses like Vroman’s Bookstore, Laemmle Playhouse Theatre, Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion, and Zona Rosa Caffe, not to mention the venerable Pasadena Playhouse just down the street.

With new ground floor retail spaces available as well as a new source of breakfast and lunchtime crowds from the future office workers, the corner may become more vibrant with pedestrians and become more visually appealing as a result. This could help strengthen the revitalization of the Playhouse District, and ultimately help connect South Lake Avenue and Old Pasadena for pedestrians.

A public hearing occurred this week to discuss the planned project

  1. The only thing about your story I dislike is its height – 5 stories. I think the city is gonna bring it down at least a story.
Hopefully, the economy will recover enuf to fill those planned office spaces & the already mostly empty restaurants. Otherwise, that corner does need to be resurrected.

    • The City Council approved the project (6-1) last night (I watched the entire meeting on this IDS project until 2AM)! I am very happy the project went through as planned and hope that it will start construction as soon as possible. One little piece of the project I learned about that I was unaware of is a pedestrian paseo that would link to the Arcade Lane next door that would essentially provide an east-west link from the Arcade Lane to the Playhouse Theatre! What a GREAT idea!
