After learning about several grocery supermarkets in the LA area being upgraded recently, I couldn’t help but imagine how we could enhance and re-imagine the Ralphs at Lake and Walnut. For those who are unaware of the trend nowadays, some supermarket chains (like Pavilions and Ralphs) in LA are starting to upgrade their suburban-style stores to become a better fit within their urban environment.

A new luxury development named Sabine (a name from the ancient people of central Italy) is now selling 12 luxury townhouses on South Lake Avenue convenient to and near great shops (like Pavilions, Peet’s Coffee, Noahs Bagels, Macy’s, etc.) geared toward buyers that may desire to live within walking distance to these amenities. Sabine’s design isn’t Italian, but French chateau style and its 12 luxury townhouses start from $1.25 million.

Upkeep Around Pasadena

The 76 gas station on Lake Avenue redid the landscaping

So about a month ago (December 16, 2009 to be exact), workers started ripping out the dated landscaping around the 76 gas station on Lake and Union. I knew that new landscaping would be coming in soon (why else would they be ripping up the plants?), so I thought a “before and after” post would be in store.

Gold Line Fillmore Station Getting Makeover in Pasadena

Conceptual designs of the upgrades the Gold Line Fillmore Station will undergo

For those who access the Gold Line through Fillmore (and there are quite a few who use it as the adjacent parking structure is always filled with Metro commuters), it should come as wonderful news that the asphalt-paved cul-de-sac that is next to the station will be transformed into a pedestrian plaza that will give the area next to the station a nice upgrade from its current less-than-glamorous state.

New Urth Caffe Renderings in Pasadena

As coffee and tea lovers wait impatiently for Urth Caffe to finally open in Pasadena in the Playhouse District, the popular local cafe, serving organic teas and coffee, continues to crawl through the city approval process (currently in the traffic study phase). These renderings below show a corner (at Colorado and Madison) transformed into an exciting new destination in the up-and-coming Playhouse District. Also, from one of the drawings, the signage for Zinke’s Drive-In shoe repair shop (currently at the corner) is seen in the back of the new building suggesting that perhaps the shoe repair shop may return after construction is completed for Urth Caffe’s new building.

Update: Gold Line Lake Ave Station in Pasadena

The east side (or main entrance) to the Gold Line station at Lake Ave is now open again after months of upgrades and construction activity

The construction upgrades and solar panel installations for the east side (the main entrance) of the Gold Line station at Lake Avenue is now complete. The fencing was initially removed for the anticipated crush of Rose Parade attendees arriving by Gold Line trains, and has since been left open for transit users to access the station below. This news will be a relief for those who use this station often as the west side entrance at the station takes longer to access the platform.

The little stretch of Union from Raymond to Fair Oaks is about to get even better as restaurants like Quadrupel Brasserie are set to open joining the popular Pop Champagne dessert bar turning a very quiet street into a viable location for new restaurant establishments.
