Conceptual designs of the upgrades the Gold Line Fillmore Station will undergo
For those who access the Gold Line through Fillmore (and there are quite a few who use it as the adjacent parking structure is always filled with Metro commuters), it should come as wonderful news that the asphalt-paved cul-de-sac that is next to the station will be transformed into a pedestrian plaza that will give the area next to the station a nice upgrade from its current less-than-glamorous state.
The new plaza will include: new landscaping, pedestrian lights, bike racks, seating, information kiosk, and some new design elements like an “overhead structure with integrated lighting” and a new “ackerstone paving band” pathway from Raymond Ave to the station.
Here is some more info from the project manager, Leon White:
“We (the City) contracted with Melendrez (our design consultant) to prepare the ‘design development’ drawings and then we had our Public Works Department prepare the final construction documents for the project. The project is schedule to commence Monday, January 11, 2010 and is anticipated to be completed in six weeks.”
I went by there yesterday (1/13/10) and didn’t see any construction activity, but it should be safe to say that this project will be fully completed by April 2010.

As one can see, a makeover will really help reinvigorate Fillmore Station

That’s great news, to help balance out the Arroyo side, which was spruced up with the rest of that street recently, with embedded lights in the crosswalk and so forth. Plus I heard that the Post Office is closing up shop just down the block, presenting perhaps another nearby great development opportunity on the horizon…
Great news! Fillmore Station in its current state is certainly one of the less inspiring or inviting stations.
There has been a recent rash of break-ins to cars parked at the Fillmore station parking structure. I saw three piles of broken glass next to three different cars near the top of the Fillmore parking structure, last night. The LA Sheriffs hanging out below confirmed it has been a problem.
