Locals relax at Jones Coffee in Pasadena
Thanks again to Jonathan Edewards, a friend and reader of this blog, for introducing me to Jones Coffee, which I believe is the best kept “coffee secret” in Pasadena! (And possibly one of the best in LA.) Seriously, just when I thought I had Pasadena covered, something like this serendipitously pops up and left me speechless–in a really good way.

The new illuminated El Cholo neon sign adds a very nice touch to Paseo Colorado's upper level courtyard
After deciding to relocate from their former location on a very speedy “highway-like” stretch on Fair Oaks Ave to a much more pedestrian-oriented and accessible location in the heart of Downtown Pasadena at the Paseo Colorado, El Cholo has now been open for exactly one week serving their famous Blue Corn Tamales.

Having just celebrated the grand opening last month (Nov 2010) of the first Blo-Out Lounge adjacent to the upscale OC mall, South Coast Plaza, the second location of this new small chain of beauty salons in Southern California will be making its debut in Old Pasadena on Raymond Ave, just a stone’s throw from Colorado Blvd.
Lucky Baldwin's new signage goes up in East Pasadena
First reported on Feast, the popular local Pasadena pub Lucky Baldwin’s–known for their fish and chips and Guinness on tap–will be opening up a second location in Pasadena on Colorado Blvd just a stone’s throw from Pasadena City College (PCC) and in a funky part of town I feel is Pasadena’s answer to Echo Park and Silver Lake (discussed earlier).

CicLAvia was one of the most phenomenal events in recent LA history, which took place on Oct 10, 2010, that proved a growing passion for change by many bicyclists and pedestrians who yearn for high-quality public spaces in LA. To realize that dream, Angelenos far and wide came together and did nothing more than simply walk and cycle down the streets usually ruled by drivers. But as 60,000 people, young and old, came out that day to revel in streets free of cars, those simple steps taken rang louder than anyone could have imagined.

A rendering of the Lake & Colorado mixed-use project in Downtown Pasadena
After two unsuccessful appeals were filed against the “The Colorado at Lake” project’s approval, the second and final appeal was thankfully rejected at a City Council meeting last night, and the long delayed mixed-use project (including the much needed restoration of the former Hotel Constance), will now officially move forward with construction.

The Soap Kitchen founder and owner, Dali Yu, has been in business in Old Pasadena for over 7 years
Located on Fair Oaks Ave across from the popular Akbar Indian restaurant in Old Pasadena, The Soap Kitchen is not your ordinary store. Why? Because not only is it NOT a chain (no, it’s a locally grown indie shop), but the store’s name accurately describes the almost magical chemical processes that go on in the back of the store that have been keeping customers happy (and clean) for over 7 years.

Lovebirds is now open. Another fast casual dining option for the lunch crowd (breakfast is served as well) at the Pasadena Convention Center and possible future dinner hours according to one of the owners I spoke to at the restaurant grand opening last Thursday (Dec 2, 2010).

A new Chase Bank has leased the former space occupied by Dilbeck Realty in Old Pasadena
Several months ago, Dilbeck Realty relocated from their space on the edge of Old Pasadena at the intersection of Colorado Blvd and Arroyo Pkwy to another corner space a block east on Marengo closer to Paseo Colorado.
