Two sources today have informed me that Equinox Fitness Gym has finally found a place to setup shop in Downtown LA. This is exciting news for those who are fans of Equinox and who either live and/or work downtown. The upscale national gym chain that recently acquired Sports Club/LA has signed a lease at the CitiGroup Center at 5th and Flower in the heart of the Financial District. Downtown LA will be Equinox’s 14th location in the LA metro and will be another great amenity added to Downtown LA that will help activate the corner of 5th and Flower even after work hours as many office workers and residents nearby will undoubtedly be headed there to workout.
According to the Department of City Planning for LA:
Change of use of approximately 32,516 square feet of restaurant and office floor area to a full service fitness center/health club, including accessory spa, juice bar and retail uses, with hours of operation from 5:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday within an existing 1,005,477-square foot high-rise office building. The project does not involve the expansion of the building footprint.
Initially, Equinox expressed interest in Related’s Grand Avenue Project on Bunker Hill across from the Walt Disney Concert Hall. However, since that project has been stalled indefinitely as Related continues to search for construction financing, Equinox remained committed to opening downtown. There is currently no updated information on when Equinox will open downtown, but my previous call to Equinox in September 2011 asking about their plans got a response of sometime in 2012.
