Last month, Kyle Fitzpatrick of the LA I’m Yours blog introduced us to Poketo’s first retail store in the Arts District, which was already in the initial stage of building out. Now two months later, Poketo is ready to shine as the new flagship store will open today on Saturday, June 23, 2012.
I stopped in yesterday (on Friday) and met with the co-owner of Poketo, Ted Vadakan, who was gracious enough to take time out from his busy schedule, as he was prepping for today’s opening, to show me his new store.
In case you’re not familiar with Poketo (pronounced poh-KEH-toe), the brand has become synonymous with style selling a variety of items and what they call “Art for Your Everyday.”
While Ted explained to me Poketo’s concept, I saw a wide range of aesthetically unique products in his store including: clothing, necklaces, wallets, backpacks, books, tea pots, cups, chairs, and even bathroom necessities like soap and towels.
According to their website, “Poketo has been commissioned by Nike, MTV, Weezer, Arcade Fire, SF MoMA and many more to create exclusive lines stamped with Poketo’s signature fun and functional style.”
What really caught my attention was when Ted told me that Poketo was carried by Target in 2010, which I am a big fan of (especially since City Target is coming to Downtown LA later this year). “Poketo curated a 52-piece collection of messenger bags, laptop cases, water bottles, umbrellas and wallets – all made with an eye for artistic detail. Poketo’s Target collection sold out nationwide.”
As I snapped these photos inside the store, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement at what the Arts District is becoming. The creative energy within the community is really starting to show through and manifest itself in the numerous businesses popping up all around the neighborhood. From Wurstküche to Pie Hole, Eat.Drink.Americano to Urth Caffe, Apolis: Common Gallery to now Poketo, the Arts District is developing into one of the most interesting urban enclaves that is uniquely Angeleno. That’s something we can all be proud of.
Poketo will be open daily from 12 to 7 pm and is located at 820 E 3rd St.
