There were rumors a few months ago that a Fatburger was looking at a space in the Medallion in the Old Bank District, and although there is still a possibility that could happen, word comes that Fatburger has signed a lease in the Financial District at the 888 S Figueroa Tower. Fatburger will be taking over the shuttered Christie’s Coffee space (approximately 1,500 square feet) that closed down in 2011.
The new Fatburger is located on Figueroa between LA Live and FIGat7th (at the cusp of the Financial District and South Park) and sits directly across the street from the future Smart & Final Extra grocery store. It’s been exciting to watch this area along Figueroa develop a critical mass of new businesses, adding to what was once just The Pantry at 9th/Fig. Boy, how things have changed over the last few years.
I think Fatburger is perfectly situated in this location as downtown residents are usually very comfortable with national chains in South Park and the Financial District (as opposed to the Historic Core along Spring and Main where independent businesses are preferred). Plus, being so close to Staples Center/LA Live, I can see it being a popular spot after a game.
Fatburger should open by the end of this year and will help activate this once lonely stretch of Figueroa.
