HGTV Designer Angelo Surmelis Chooses Downtown LA for First Retail Location

HGTV host and designer, Angelo Surmelis, is opening his first boutique showroom at the beautiful Eastern Columbia building at 9th/Broadway

The exciting evolution of Broadway continues with the news that interior designer and HGTV host of Rate My Space, Angelo Surmelis, will be opening his first retail showroom at the beautifully ornate Eastern Columbia building in the Historic Core of Downtown LA. The new furniture store will be called angelo:HOME, and it will occupy the retail space just to the right of the front entrance of the Eastern Columbia.

The new retail showroom will carry a diverse range of select furniture pieces rotating from his home collection. A quick look at his online store shows a large selection for the home including: sofas and loveseats, arm chairs, ottomans and benches, tables, bedding, and rugs.

I spoke to Ed Baran, the brand manager for angelo:HOME, who told me that Angelo has been looking for a suitable space in Downtown LA for almost two years. He was attracted to Downtown LA because of his passion and appreciation for architecture and design. As a result, the Eastern Columbia ended up being the final decision for Angelo’s new boutique location. The beautiful art deco and turquoise terra cotta of the Eastern Columbia stands out like a shining gem even among all the other beautiful historic structures in Downtown LA.

Growing up in Chicago, Angelo was inspired by the city’s beautiful and rich architectural history that brought out his innate passion for design and the appreciation of the way cities function (he’s totally speaking my language now). Today, both Chicago and New York are two of his favorite cities because of the way they look and function.

angelo:HOME joins a growing list of new businesses that are transforming the southern stretch of Broadway into the next hottest neighborhood in Downtown LA. Ace Hotel, Sparkle Factory, Umamicatessen, and Two Boots are just some of the most recent examples of exciting businesses developing a critical mass on southern Broadway that will continue to expand northward along Broadway.

Construction build-out should begin soon on angelo:HOME with a planned opening in fall.

  1. I agree – too exciting. I have to admit I am amazed at the speed in which businesses are popping up on Broadway. Being a native to Los Angeles who use to shop in all the great stores downtown when I was a kid really warms my heart.

  2. Lawrence says

It’s great to see the Eastern get another retail tenant. The building is such a defining landmark on Broadway and is now at the center of the changes taking place on this corridor. Looking forward to seeing this store and Angelo’s designs.

  3. Illithid Dude says

Honestly, this is the most beautiful building in all of Los Angeles. Love to see it become utilized even more.

  4. This addition to the Eastern Columbia speaks to us! Anything design related would be desired. Design at this caliber is most welcome. Keep “Bringing Back Broadway!!”
