Last June 2012, we first reported that Fatburger was opening their first downtown location at 9th and Figueroa, just a stone’s throw away from Staples Center/LA Live and across the street from the new Smart & Final Extra grocery store opening soon in the next few months. Now about nine months later, the new burger joint soft opened yesterday on Sunday with large crowds — many who came downtown to watch a Clippers game — packing into the 1,600 square foot restaurant space with many diners eating alfresco in the new spacious outdoor patio seating area.

The new Fatburger, voted “Best Burger in Beijing, Dubai, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas,” replaces a shuttered nondescript coffee shop called Christie’s Coffee located in the 888 International Tower Plaza complex, which is in a stellar location but could eventually use a nice remodel (click here to see what can be redone). What I was especially glad to see was how Fatburger immediately helped activate the plaza with its large outdoor patio seating area, making this stretch along Figueroa more lively and vibrant for pedestrians.

Co-owner Asif Sheikh told me when I stopped by later on Sunday, “We had so many people come in today, we could barely keep up!” This could mean a few more Fatburgers opening in other parts of Downtown LA in the future.

  1. Tommys beats Fatburger all day long, go to Beverly & Rampart, enjoy

  2. I love Fatburger. Its prob the most underrated burger around. In-N-Out and Five Guys are good too, but Fatburger doesn’t get as much press as they do.

  3. This will be a smashing success. Love how Fig has come to life. I also walked past the Brooks Brothers with its ‘opening in spring 2013′ frontage. Downtown is by far becoming the hottest hood in the entire metropolitan area.

  4. Lets start to bring retail in, clothing stores,

  5. Great to have this here. Unfortunately, it looks like they didn’t install a charbroiler like most other Fatburgers have, but on the up side, they are now open 24 hours a day!
