Downtown LA is on fire right now! The amazing deluge of exciting DTLA retail news continues with the announcement today from Curbed LA that Urban Outfitters has signed a lease to take over the approximately 10,000 square foot historic Rialto Theatre near 8th and Broadway, which once seated 900. Rumors started back in Sept 2012 that the Philadelphia-based international retail chain — selling trendy urban chic clothing for both men and women — was in serious lease negotiations to take over and rehab the dilapidated 1917 theater venue. Eight months later, we can rejoice that another significant retailer is ready to jump on the Downtown LA bandwagon.
The two most exciting things to me about Urban Outfitters going into this very unique space is 1) the beautiful Rialto Theatre, which is currently in really sad shape, will be completely rehabbed and brought back to its former glory while also restoring “the oldest existing historic theatre marquee in LA” according to a press release from Councilman Huizar’s Bringing Back Broadway office, and 2) Urban Outfitters will continue to add to a growing list of new and exciting businesses that are opening (or have already opened) on the southern portion of Broadway including Ace Hotel, Umamicatessen, angelo:HOME, Two Boots Pizza, and the recent DTLA Rising announcement of Acne Studios coming to 9th and Broadway.
Urban Outfitters, based in Philadelphia, has more than 170 locations in 8 countries and also owns Anthropologie and Free People, which I believe will both open downtown at some point in the future as well.
The new Downtown LA flagship Urban Outfitters may open as early as year’s end, and according to Curbed LA, will include a “concession stand-inspired cash wrap with glass fronts and tops, a projection screen, steel mesh stairs and exposed wood truss structure.”
