Another exciting addition will soon be added to the urban renewal efforts along Broadway in Downtown LA. Several sources have informed me that a new bar from Brooklyn, New York called Kinfolk Studios has leased out the basement level under the architecturally stunning Eastern Columbia building at 9th and Broadway. A call to Kinfolk Studios, located in Williamsburg, confirms that they are, indeed, planning to open at the Eastern Columbia. Apparently, not only is it a bar but also a creative graphic design and bike studio. It will be interesting to see how that concept will be executed in this location.
“Kinfolk [Studios] was formed in 2008 by friends from New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo, Japan,” as stated on their website. With locations in New York and Tokyo, it now makes perfect sense that the third (and final?) location would be Los Angeles given the founders’ backgrounds. And what better spot to choose than the most architecturally stunning building in Downtown LA?
More details regarding Kinfolk Studios will be revealed soon according to an Eastern Columbia HOA announcement. The main entrance to the new bar will be located off of 9th Street where an existing unused staircase once led patrons to a long-forgotten business, possibly a seedy dive bar, in the basement.
Kinfolk Studios joins a solid list of other businesses that have decided to open at the Eastern Columbia including: Swedish clothier Acne Studios (no relation with Kinfolk Studios), angelo:HOME furniture boutique, and Om Nom Organics neighborhood market.
