This past Friday, another heavy hitting retailer was added to 9th and Broadway, the rapidly evolving intersection and epicenter of Broadway’s amazing revitalization comeback. The Australian apothecary and beauty skincare line, Aesop, opened at 11 am and joins a growing list of upscale retail shops and other businesses helping to transform this once seedy and desolate area into the next hottest destination in Downtown LA.
Established in Melbourne in 1987, Aesop has become one of the most sought after and well respected brands in skincare and beauty products sold usually at high-end stores like Barney’s New York or Opening Ceremony here in Los Angeles. Now LA joins New York, Boston, and San Francisco with actual standalone stores. The new Aesop signature store in Downtown LA is about 1,000 square feet large and is their second LA location after the one on Abbot Kinney opened last year in October.
Aesop opens nearby the still-new Ace Hotel, which opened this past January with a powerful catalytic force behind its brand. Just in the last 5 months, the area surrounding 9th/Broadway has been transformed from obscurity to excellence. Basically, the intersection is unrecognizable now. In late December, both Acne Studios and Urban Outfitters opened on this once desolate block just before Ace Hotel opened. Then a few months later, Tanner Goods opened next to Umami Burger and OAK NYC opened in the Sparkle Factory. And now Aesop has opened a beautiful signature store in what was once a dumpy check cashing store. Next up to open will be French fashion line A.P.C. and Big Gay Ice Cream from New York.
Downtown LA’s Aesop store will be open daily from 11 am to 6 pm.
