A new neighborhood bakery from Studio City called Big Sugar Bakeshop is coming to the Financial District in Downtown LA later this summer. Opening on the Wilshire Blvd side of the 322-unit Pegasus Apartments — one of my favorite mid-century modern buildings in LA designed by renowned architect Welton Becket — Big Sugar will open in a cute little space next to Caffe Primo coming in at just under 600 square feet.
Big Sugar is known for its convenient “cake, card, and gift” concept that’s perfect for the “busy individual who doesn’t have time to plan” according to Big Sugar owner Mary Odson. The Downtown LA location will offer all the bakery favorites like Good Morning muffins and yummy cupcakes available at the original Studio City location that opened in 2006 on Ventura Blvd. The pastries will be “baked fresh daily in small batches throughout the day using the finest ingredients” Odson tells me in an email. Asked why Odson decided to open Big Sugar in Downtown LA:
“We have been looking for a location in Downtown LA for about 2 years because it is a dynamic emerging community of both residents and businesses. We already have customers in Downtown LA that we deliver large platters of baked goods, custom gift baskets and celebration cakes of all sizes to on a weekly basis.”
Construction on Big Sugar has already begun and an opening is slated for late July 2014.
