It started off with Acne Studios in December of last year. The upscale Swedish fashion line opened their global flagship store at the corner of 9th and Broadway on the ground floor of the beautiful turquoise art deco Eastern Columbia building. Then just last month in early May, another upscale retailer called Austere opened a block away at the corner of 9th and Hill on the ground floor of a historic parking structure in a 5,000 square foot space once an old auto showroom. Austere is as much a showroom as it is retail, according to its owner Fredrik Carlstrom. The store features sleek Scandinavian designs ranging from furniture to clothes and even a sparkling white Volvo SUV parked in the middle of the cavernous raw space with exposed concrete ceilings. Now, the much-welcomed Swedish invasion into Downtown LA continues with a soon-to-open barbershop called Roy & Son.

Roy & Son currently has two locations in Sweden — one in Stockholm and one in Malmö — and will be opening its first US location here in Downtown LA within the Austere retail showroom with its own entrance off of Hill Street (across from The Stocking Frame). The founder, Roy, opened his first barbershop in 1950 and was eventually joined by his son Peter to create Roy & Son. They are now a well-established name in Sweden with a dedicated mission to provide a “classic shave with a modern haircut,” according to Carlstrom.

“Roy & Son is revitalizing a grooming tradition by re-imagining the classic barbershop with Scandinavian aesthetics, so it fits perfectly into Austere,” Carlstrom explained. “I know one of the partners really well and it was a two minute conversation before we agreed for them to open here.”

The new Roy & Son will take up about 220 square feet of space within the almost 5,000 square foot store and have two barber chairs. According to Carlstrom, the space will have a “very Scandinavian minimalistic design” and “the service and craftsmanship will honor their way of working back in Sweden which is a little different from barbershops here.

Roy & Son is scheduled to open in early July.

  1. Love it, and the neighborhood. But $95 for a barber? Eh.

Guess we’ll have to wait and see US pricing…

    • Jake says

Yeah, I’d never pay $95 for a cut. Bolt Barbers is just as overpriced with their $50 cut and beard trim.

  2. From the horse’s mouth:

We are very excited to open.

    A cut will cost $50
    A shave will cost $40
    A beard cut $20

Then we also have some additional services which is a beard cut & shave at $40, an exclusive shave which is an hour treatment for $80 and a hangover treatment for $40.

All services include a beer and haircuts include a wash.
