Downtown LA Grand Central Market Transformed by New Food Stalls, Dinner Hours Added

Grand Central Market from 1917 is going thru an incredible transformation with new food concepts being added to the historic food hall

A lot of positive attention has been showered on Broadway lately, especially near 9th/Broadway where some of the most exciting developments in LA have happened over the last year with the opening of Ace Hotel and esoteric high-end retailers we thought would never open in Downtown LA in a million years (i.e., Acne Studios, OAK NYC, Aesop, Tanner Goods, Austere, etc). But the revitalization of Grand Central Market at 3rd/Broadway is just as exciting and acts as the northern anchor to Broadway’s amazing come back. (Now we just have to fill in everything in between.) Over the last year, Grand Central Market has gone through an incredible transformation by adding a slew of new and exciting food stalls that makes the historic food hall from 1917 one of the coolest culinary hot spots in all of Southern California.

Since June of last year, no less than 10 new food concepts (see pictures below) have been added to Grand Central Market in addition to three original “pioneers” that opened in early 2013: Sticky Rice, G&B Coffee, and Valerie at GCM. Now, visiting Grand Central Market is a culinary experience mixed with a wide variety of diverse food options. There is now an exciting energy in the air filled with an ever increasing diversity of new Angelenos coming back to the city from the suburbs.

As a result of all these new food concepts attracting a larger swath of Angelenos from afar, Grand Central Market has added dinner hours from Thursday thru Saturday closing at 9pm. As the immediate area continues to revitalize in the coming years adding more new restaurants and shops, obviously more people will be coming to Downtown LA, which will allow Grand Central Market to extend dinner hours every day of the week.

i remember reading here and in the LA Times that BCV architects was supposed to renovate the grand central market and perhaps add some underground bar or restaurant or something of that nature. Is that still happening?

  2. the transformation is remarkable, but god help them if they touch the sarita’s or get rid of all the taco places.

also, it’s getting awfully crowded. more seating is needed.

How about renovating the existing bathrooms and/or adding new ones at Grand Central market?

Any ETA on the re-opening of Angels Flight?

  4. This is so exciting! I agree with the comments about the restrooms and adding additional seating.

I don’t mind all the $15 hipster sandwich and $8 Kombucha places, though I do not patronize them. HOWEVER if they touch Tacos Tumbras a Tomas and the produces vendors Grand Central will be ruined.

I would like to see a brewery that u serve ur choice of beer tap from all over the world and they charge by the weight and type of beer.

There is nothing wrong with taco places! They just need some remodeling! They are actually the places ordinary people go to. Instead of the expensive choices. There is a mariscos sea food vendor that should either relocate or tone it down because they are not fitting in. And yes definitely more seating is needed. I had to eat standing up on Saturday. Progress is absolutely heading somewhere good

  8. make it look like the anaheim meet packing district

Having lived a block away for 9 years, I’m finally able to enjoy the market without feeling grossed out. 8 years and probably went 3 times. Over the last year, I’m there almost weekly. Such great improvements and some great food options. I love that it’s a mix of old school and new school.

HOWEVER – the market needs to clean up. Look up next time you’re eating and look at the grime on the pipes and vents ready to fall into your eggslut. The housekeeping of this place is as bad as it’s always been. Wash your windows, clean the grime off the pipes and remodel your restrooms!

I’m hoping for a wine/beer counter and some kind of gourmet chocolate / confection counter next.

I agree with Clark for the most part. The owner needs to clean up the common areas or all these wonderful new businesses will move on. I think they call it flight to quality or something like that. And quality is being developed and redeveloped all over the place in dtla.

It would be a shame if grand central market missed this …..
