Wow that was fast. It only took less than 4 months to go from announcement to opening. The upscale Brazilian BBQ chain Fogo de Chao soft opened last Sunday, Dec 28 just before New Year’s Eve. Located at 8th and Figueroa in the Financial District, construction started on the massive 8,120 square foot restaurant space replacing Roy’s, which shuttered this past summer after almost a decade run. For meat lovers, this place is heaven. Fogo is known for their high quality meats including filet mignon and lamb chops among many other yummy cuts.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the Brazilian BBQ concept, you’ll be provided with an individual double-sided coaster at your table: red on one side, green on the other. It’s simple. When you want meat, you turn it to the green side and numerous servers roaming around the restaurant with large skewers of various meats (beef, chicken, pork, and lamb) will come to you and ask if you want their goods. When you want a break, you turn it to the red side. The best part? It’s all you can eat (AYCE), especially if you absolutely love lamb chops like me. Medium rare please!

Besides the food, the new restaurant itself has already done wonders at activating this corner at 8th and Figueroa, giving it a new exciting energy that Roy’s just didn’t have, unfortunately. For one thing, the new glassy entrance at the corner with a prominent cantilevered awning topped with the restaurant signage is eye-catching and draws attention inside the restaurant. Roy’s, on the other hand, had a wooden door that never allowed anyone to actually see inside. Another big change: Fogo is leaving the curtains open, again, something Roy’s did not do. Leaving the curtains open allow pedestrians outside to see diners inside making the corner feel much more lively with good energy and potentially drawing more customers in.

Fogo de Chao in Downtown LA is still in soft opening mode. They are expecting to get their liquor license by the end of January (but obviously it’s out of their hands). When they do get it hopefully very soon, expect happy hours on Mondays through Fridays from 4:30 to 6:30 pm.

Fogo de Chao is located at 800 S Figueroa. For hours and menu prices, visit Fogo de Chao online.

  1. Wow! Can’t wait to try this spot. Plus I’d sit at the table with the birds eye view of the Wilshire Grand.

I’ve been to their West LA location, and it was a wonderful time. I’m a little bummed this didn’t open before the new year. As a transplant, of many years now, I have no family local, but I do like to take my extended family/close friends out to dinner during the holidays as a nice gift without having to buy gifts ;) I was watching and waiting for Fogo de Chao to open, hoping I could have done it for this year’s dinner, but it opened just a few weeks too late.

Oh well, here’s to the next occasion worth celebrating! I could go for some bacon-wrapped-chicken right about now.
