Third wave coffee bar Barista Society soft opened today inside the beautifully renovated Union Station in Downtown LA — the transit hub of the west coast. Having gained a loyal following of coffee fanatics with his first location at Library Tower, which opened in May 2013,¬†owner Charn Bak is now planning to ramp up more openings this year — potentially three more — starting with his second location here in the eastern wing of Union Station near the Red and Purple Line subway entrance and the Patsaouras Bus Plaza. The third location will be located at California Plaza with another fourth undisclosed location somewhere in the Financial District.

Enclosed in floor-to-ceiling glass, the beautiful new 400 square foot shop with a 30-foot long marble and wood coffee bar serves up Barista Society’s own roasted beans (Stumptown and Blue Bottle are also available) as well as Boston-based MEM Tea if you’re in the mood for a hot chai tea. Also to be added in the near future will be delicious pastries and chocolate to go with your drink perfect for morning commuters on the run.

Barista Society will be in soft opening mode until its grand opening on April 14. Hours in soft opening will be from 7 am to 7 pm and will then switch to permanent hours from 5 am to 9 pm starting after the grand opening day.

  1. Yes! I’ve been dreaming of a place on this end of the station. Although there’s currently a Starbucks, it isn’t very convenient for those of us who catch a train on this side! Oh, and needless to say, the coffee is much better quality! I can’t wait to try it tomorrow morning!

this is awesome. but any ideas on when they are going to update the horrendous restrooms?

Love it! specially the front floor to ceiling windows! cant wait to try the coffee.. im not a big Starbucks fan.. Super excited to try something new

  4. It’s a great amenity and the space looks sharp. That said, it’s unfortunate that it doesn’t look like there’s any space for customers to linger. Even a standing-only counter against the windows would have been a nice touch.

    • Maybe they can add a counter against the glass on the outside of the shop, because there is no elbow room inside. You can sit at that weird “art bench” outside of the store. Next to the giant scat pile.

The current Starbucks at Union Station is dark, cramped, and not inviting. This looks like a much nicer alternative!

Place looks really nice. Good amenity for Union Station. Still, don’t understand why there’s no seating for customers! Is the message please come in, buy, now get the hell out????
