What started eight years ago in Washington, DC in 2007 by three very smart Georgetown students, the popular east coast salad eatery Sweetgreen has grown to 30 locations in the country (and counting) opening their first LA location in West Hollywood earlier this year with another in Santa Monica coming soon. The LA opening spree doesn’t end there. Now the health-conscious green chain is headed to the heart of LA — Downtown LA, of course — with a new location appropriately nearby the highly anticipated upcoming Whole Foods.
Looking to open sometime in early 2016, Sweetgreen will be opening on 8th Street between Olive and Hill in what used to be the long, long shuttered New York Hardware Trading Company (an LA-not-NY-based hardware store that lasted from the 1920s to the 1970s apparently) adjacent to the The Vault nightclub, which will be vacated and completely remodeled geared for new tenants. Approximately 3,300 square feet large, the new DTLA Sweetgreen will offer its certified organic selection of seasonal veggies sourced from local farms in the region, which allows for the fast-casual eatery to change up its menu depending on what’s in season or available.
Surrounded by incredible construction activity all around, Sweetgreen will be another significant addition to the growing 8th Street corridor, which is fast becoming the new hottest up-and-coming street in Downtown LA. Not only is Whole Foods opening this November at 8th and Grand, but the trendy Freehand Hostel will be opening late next year directly next door to Sweetgreen in the historic Commercial Exchange building. In addition, you have the Broadway Trade Center less than a block east and the stunning Art Deco edifice, the Garfield Building across the street, which was just listed on the market for sale with an exciting prospect for hotel conversion. In a few years, 8th Street is going to be incredible as an active east-west pedestrian thoroughfare.
