It’s been a little while since something big was announced at 9th and Broadway, which has become the epicenter of Downtown LA’s new high-end retail shopping hub in the making anchored by the catalytic Ace Hotel that opened in 2014. A trusted source has revealed the next exciting retailer to be added to this growing shopping mecca becoming akin to New York’s trendy SoHo district. Next up, opening on the ground floor of the stunning Eastern Columbia Art Deco masterpiece will be the upscale German eyewear brand Mykita opening only their second retail store in the country.
Replacing the recently shuttered Angelo:Home sitting opposite from high-end Acne Studios and Il Caffe, Mykita will take over the 1,500 square foot space left behind by the former furniture showroom. The haute eyewear brand from Germany, selling prescription frames and sunglasses that are handmade in their factory in Berlin (known for their unique hingeless design with no screws or welded joints), will transform the space into a visually compelling store that will highly complement the existing high-end stores nearby.
What makes this store an especially exciting addition to Downtown LA is the exclusive nature of Mykita and the limited stores it has worldwide (they’re in a handful of cities like Paris and Tokyo). In fact, the new store here will only be the second one in the entire country outside of one other store in New York City. To me, this says that not only did Mykita choose Los Angeles, it chose pedestrian-oriented Downtown LA (smartly in my book) over the typical car-oriented Westside.
Mykita should be open by the end of the year. It joins a slew of other retailers opening nearby 9th/Broadway including: Acne Studios, A.P.C., Aesop, Tanner Goods, OAK NYC, Austere, the upcoming BNKR, and Urban Outfitters.
