Cross Campus has become one of the most successful coworking spaces founded in Los Angeles. The first Cross Campus opened in Santa Monica in 2012 catering to the robust tech sector found in Silicon Beach with another location opening in Old Pasadena in late 2014. Now the biggest Cross Campus yet is slated to open in the next month in the heart of Downtown LA’s bustling Financial District, which is now surrounded by frenetic economic activity all around.
The idea of coworking spaces brings both creative entrepreneurs and even established companies together renting and sharing a community office space in a very non-traditional setup that encourages networking and socializing versus the standard old format where people work in stuffy cubicles disconnected from each other.
Coworking spaces like Cross Campus are meant to provide the flexible environment that encourages creativity but also a structured stable working habitat that supports an entrepreneur’s economic growth. Members are allowed to come and go as they please with 24-hour access accommodating to everyone’s different productive work schedules.
The new Cross Campus in Downtown LA will be making a big splash when it opens in April. The massive 33,000 square foot facility (with an option to expand even larger in the future) will span three floors taking a portion of the ground floor and the entire second and third levels of the 16-story 800 Wilshire tower, which sits strategically a block away from both the $1.2 billion Wilshire Grand Tower to the west and The Bloc shopping center to the south.
Co-founder and CEO Ronen Olshansky told me the proximity to the 7th/Metro subway station — where the Red, Purple, Blue, and Expo Lines converge — was a huge factor for him when choosing a location in Downtown LA.
“The centrality of the location across the street from the 7th Street metro station was important so that DTLA is train accessible to our Pasadena location and will link to our Santa Monica location via the Expo Line that starts running in May,” said Olshansky.
Downtown LA’s Cross Campus will support up to 600 members with options for individual offices and reserved desks. In addition, there will be a 300-person event space and 20 “hospitality rooms” that include showers (for those who bike to the office), a rejuvenation room, mother’s room, call booths, meeting rooms, and conference facilities. Unlimited valet parking through Valux will be another perk for members.
And something unique to Downtown LA, there will be a Cross Campus bar lounge on the ground floor (with direct pedestrian access from Flower Street) that will offer members — when they want to take a break from working — an artisanal coffee and tea menu as well as beer and liquor options.
“Bottom line is that, today, the vibe in DTLA is amazing, on par with other global urban centers,” said Olshansky as he described what he sees for downtown’s future. “That is what’s drawing the startup and tech communities. On any given night, it’s exciting to see so many great events taking place in DTLA, and we’re looking forward to making the community even bigger when we open in April.”
