Petco Unleashed Store Coming to South Park in Downtown LA

Unleashed by Petco will be opening a new 5,000 square foot urban store in CIM Group's new 888 S Hope development

With literally thousands of pets living in DTLA, it’s kind of surprising there aren’t more pet stores scattered all around downtown, especially in the South Park and Financial District neighborhoods where a large concentration of residents live. Well, that’s about to change. Soon downtown residents will have a new place to shop catering to their furry friends when Unleashed by Petco opens later this year in South Park.

Located at 9th and Hope nearby Ralph’s and Whole Foods, the new Unleashed pet store will be opening on the ground level of a parking structure that’s part of developer CIM Group’s 888 S Hope residential high-rise tower that has yet to break ground after more than 2 years since the corner site was cordoned off with green construction fencing. The new store will help further activate this stretch of Hope Street that’s seen so much development occur over the last several years including the gleaming new 8th+Hope luxury high-rise.

Construction on the six story parking structure — that will include some public parking for retail but will mainly serve the tower’s future residents — was completed last year. Although the parking structure looks barren right now, the modern architectural facade that will cover the structure (seen in renderings) is slated to be installed this year. When Unleashed opens, a new vertical sign will be installed on the elevator shaft facing Hope Street.

The new store, which will take up the entire commercial retail space of the parking structure, will be approximately 5,000 square feet large facing Hope Street. The space is long and narrow and will have two entrances, one located on the north side and another adjacent to the structure’s elevator shaft on the south side. The Downtown LA Unleashed store will be typical in size to most other locations, which can range from 4,000 up to 8,000 square feet.

Based in San Diego, Petco has over 1,300 locations in North America. With only about 100 locations, the Unleashed by Petco concept is a smaller and newer format — usually half the size of a full-sized store — that allows Petco to be more adaptable and flexible in their penetration into various markets, including a hyper urban location like Downtown LA.

Unleashed by Petco is slated to begin construction soon with an opening by fall of this year.

As for the high-rise portion of the project: The 33-story residential tower is expected to break ground later this summer. Last month, CIM Group initiated preliminary work on the site with some abatement activity by excavating and removing a couple of underground oil tanks. Apparently, the land was used as a gas station many, many years ago.

  1. Decentralize Skid Row says

Good. We need to energize that part of Hope Street. I walk by there frequently and see lots of homeless sleeping in front. Can we say EYESORE? Once the store opens hopefully the homeless won’t be allowed to sleep there anymore…………………….We need to build more supportive housing and bring back the mental institutions and build them OUTSIDE of downtown. Watching people dying on the streets is not “compassionate” and it’s not the answer.

What they need to work on is not centralize all the homeless shelters in downtown, but to spread them out through the city. Just adding more shelters in Skidrow will add more homeless to the area. I heard once that homeless people were coming here on the Greyhound from other cities because of all the service they can receive.
