We’ve been waiting for this one for what seems like — forever. Even though we only really found out about a year ago that Bunker (or “BNKR”) was opening downtown, but it’s the location that makes this retailer from Australia extra significant and exciting to DTLA’s urban revitalization. The fashion forward brand based in Adelaide (Australia’s fifth largest city) quietly opened its doors for business last Saturday (spotted by Racked LA) at the very hot intersection of 9th and Broadway, which has become one of the main epicenters in Downtown LA’s fragmented but expanding shopping scene.
Located on the ground level of the historic Blackstone Apartments, the 6,000 square foot Bunker flagship store takes up the entire corner of the building defined by a minimalistic storefront with expansive floor-to-ceiling windows facing the street. Next to the main entrance on Broadway, a large neon sign illuminated in white can be seen hanging from the store’s interior ceiling spelling out “BNKR,” which beckons the neighborhood’s growing pedestrian foot traffic to go inside and explore the new shop. For the foreseeable future, the store will carry clothes for women only. Bummer for guys, like myself, who are also looking for more places to shop downtown.
As the first U.S. location, the new Bunker store joins a small but burgeoning list of trendy and exclusive stores and businesses that have set up shop near 9th and Broadway. Ever since Ace Hotel decided to open here along this stretch of Broadway, the boutique hotel became an instant anchor attracting brands we thought would never open downtown like Acne Studios, A.P.C., and Aesop. Just across the street from Bunker, the next exciting retailer to open later this year will be the high-end German eyewear store Mykita, which DTLA Rising announced in early March 2016.
