Something new and exciting is coming to LA Live — RETAIL! The mega development by AEG that helped jump start the Downtown LA renaissance over a decade ago has focused almost entirely on restaurants and entertainment venues leaving out the all-important retail stores that also help attract shoppers. In other words, you can “eat,” you can “play,” but unfortunately you can’t “shop” at LA Live. But soon that’s about to change a bit as one of Downtown LA’s first pioneer retailers, Brigade LA, will be opening its brand new flagship store here at LA Live.
Back in 2011, Brigade LA opened on 7th Street near Olive in the historic Mandel Lofts. The opening of the store was super exciting to me at the time because, again, there were a lot of restaurants and bars opening up, but very little retail that would be needed to make Downtown LA into a shopping destination. Now, downtown is finally adding more stores (like Zara, H&M, Acne Studios, etc.) over the last few years, but I’ll never forget that Brigade LA was the first major fashion retailer to open in central downtown offering designers and name brands you just couldn’t find in Downtown LA, such as Vivienne Westwood, J Brand, Jeffrey Campbell, and Wildfox to name a few.
This summer, Brigade LA will be relocating its current store at the Mandel to the ground floor retail space at the Courtyard Marriott and Residence Inn on Olympic Blvd. Going from 2,100 square feet to a massive 6,000 square foot space (about half will actually be allocated for retail sales), store owner Kuo Yang jumped at the opportunity to upgrade his store brand with a new perfect and complementary location at LA Live’s hotel property. Not only will the store obviously have a street facing entrance along Olympic Blvd, but there will also be an entrance that leads directly into the lobby of the hotel, almost guaranteeing that hotel guests will be wandering in looking to shop.
