Karl Strauss Brewery Opens Massive LA Flagship in Downtown LA

Karl Strauss has opened a massive 13,500 SF brewery here in Downtown LA's Financial District

Wow, time sure does fly. I can’t believe it’s already been a year and half since DTLA Rising first announced that Karl Strauss — the local brewery founded in San Diego in 1989 — was opening its main Los Angeles flagship location here in Downtown LA (there’s another one in Universal City Walk). We’ve all been waiting eagerly for another eatery to activate a once desolate corner in the middle of Downtown LA’s Financial District. Well, the wait is finally over as Karl Strauss is now officially open for beer and foodie lovers alike.

Located at Wilshire Blvd and Grand Ave, just a short block north from the ever-popular Bottega Louie, Karl Strauss opened its doors officially for business this past Monday just in time before Thanksgiving. Although it was announced back in June 2015 that they were coming to the Financial District, build out and construction on the space didn’t actually happen until just this past August. A soft opening during the weekend welcomed many Angelenos a taste of the menu, and of course, the vast selection of beer Karl Strauss is known for including its year round and seasonal varieties.

Karl Strauss replaces a former Bank of America branch here at 600 Wilshire Blvd. The massive space at 13,500 square feet makes this one of the largest locations for the San Diego-based chain with a seating capacity of up to 500 guests. What also makes this particularly exciting for me is how the new brewery activates this once dead corner with new life and energy. Basically, it continues to help fill in the “dead zone” gaps within Downtown LA, making the growing city center more walkable, pedestrian-oriented, and exciting to be a part of.

Check out the Karl Strauss website for more info about their beer selection as well as the DTLA store hours.

This is Emma, the artist. I told her she needed to add the Wilshire Grand Tower when I saw she was using an old skyline shot of Downtown LA! (My good deed for the day)

Very nice indeed. Drove past last night and thought “wow that looks nice.”

  2. ^^^ LOL that would NOT be good to leave out the Wilshire Grand Tower in the mural!

Nice! Whole Foods, along with Bottega Louie have really helped activate the sidewalks…and now this? The urban/pedestrian experience in DTLA keeps improving. Even 5 years back, I don’t recall seeing so many pedestrians after dark….now if only The Bloc (and the Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas) would hurry it up and open already!

P.S. Thank god, Brigham! Can’t leave out the Wilshire Grand! Lol

  5. It’s good to have another destination in the Financial District! It certainly makes Grand & Wilshire a viable, lively spot for activity! The corner has come to life!

  6. No one knows how hard Brigham works. He is seriously one of the catalyst that brought Downtown from a desolate place to what it is now. Thanks Brig! – Ryan

What a lovely mural of DTLA! (For some reason it gives me a great sense of civic pride). As the ‘creative’ capital; L.A. is home to the largest collection of ppl working in the creative/artistic fields. As DTLA continues to grow, it only makes sense if more businesses are proactive in their marketing/branding of DTLA. Art has a way of enriching/redefining our environments (both in the public and private realms!), so I would love to see more businesses commission artworks by artists like, Emma (and ultimately recognizing the important symbiosis/role artists have with this city).
