One of the most popular sandwich chains in America is FINALLY planning to open one here in Downtown LA! Ever since I tried Earl of Sandwich for the first time back in 2012 while visiting Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, I’ve been a huge fan of their delicious Full Montagu packed with juicy and tender slices of roast beef and turkey on toasted wheat bread. Unfortunately, those Earl-sandwich cravings meant I’d have to drive all the way out to Downtown Disney in Anaheim just to get one (that’s been the only one in the LA metro area so far, although a brand new one just opened at Tom Bradley at LAX).
Earl of Sandwich will be opening its new Downtown LA location up on Bunker Hill, which is sure to make a lot of office workers very happy. The Orlando-based eatery has just signed a lease taking over a vacant 930 square foot space at Two California Plaza owned by CIM Group. The empty retail space currently sits between salad spot Mixt and George’s Greek Grill and just a few doors down from Blue Cow Kitchen.
The coming arrival of Earl of Sandwich adds to a recent surge of interest to reactivate Bunker Hill, which has lagged behind other areas of Downtown LA when it comes to being active on nights or on the weekends due to its steep geographic position up on a hill as well as being mostly a daytime office hub. Fortunately, the opening of the immensely popular Broad art museum in Sept 2015 really helped jump start that process of diversifying the mix of uses on Bunker Hill (click here for a full tour of The Broad inside).
Two California Plaza is leasing up a slew of new ground floor retail businesses (i.e., Poke Bar, Pressed Juicery, SOHO Yoga) following the lead of its neighboring property, One California Plaza, which underwent a dramatic million dollar makeover last year spearheaded by its owner Beacon Capital Partners. A full upgrade including new outdoor furniture, signage, and other placemaking elements will be incorporated into Two California Plaza in late 2017. In addition, the office tower lobby is almost done with its own modernization and aesthetic upgrades including new large glass pop outs.
Earl of Sandwich is planning to open by late spring 2017.
Even though its a hike up Bunker Hill, I’ll gladly take that over driving out to Anaheim past the Orange Curtain.
