Korean BBQ lovers who live and work downtown will be happy to learn that you’ll soon be able to get your grilled carnivorous fix without having to leave downtown. Over in the burgeoning South Park district, the highly rated Genwa Korean BBQ (ranked one of the best KBBQ spots in LA by Eater LA) will be joining a growing list of new businesses that are helping to shape the fledgling urban community into one of Downtown LA’s most exciting neighborhoods.
Represented by real estate agent Mitch Carricart, Genwa Korean BBQ has signed a lease recently to open their third location here in Downtown LA’s 1000 Grand by Windsor located on the southeast corner of Olympic Blvd and Grand Ave not far from the towering construction cranes that loom over the Staples Center/LA Live area. According to listing broker Justin Weiss of Kennedy Wilson, the LA-based restaurant that’s been rated a solid 4.5 stars by thousands of Yelp reviewers, plans to open an approximately 5,000 square foot corner space that’s flanked by the new pet shop store Healthy Spot and the soon-to-open Midwest pizza chain PizzaFire.
With two existing LA locations—the original one on Mid-Wilshire and a second La Cienega one in Beverly Hills—the third Downtown LA location will open sometime later in 2018. Well-known for their high-quality meats and delicious vast selection of banchan (Korean side dishes), it’s safe to say that Genwa will become an instant hot destination within South Park that will enliven this growing-but-still-quiet stretch of Olympic Blvd.
It’s amazing to me to see just how much this area of South Park has transformed over the last several years. I still remember vividly this stretch of Olympic Blvd was once lined with desolate, anti-pedestrian surface parking lots. At that time, it seemed far-fetched to imagine that South Park could ever become a walkable urban community. Today, as more mixed-use projects are added to South Park, including this 274-unit 1000 Grand by Windsor property, that dream of an expanded walkable urban realm is finally becoming true.
